What to consider when buying a new front door?

So you’re in the market for a new front door. Nice! You’ve scoured the internet and have a rough idea of what you want. Perfect! Now comes the question, how do you narrow down your selection? Apart from design and material choice, there several other factors that may not necessarily cross your mind.

Factors that may affect your choice in buying a new front door

It goes without saying. Protecting your door is quite important, as is carrying out routine maintenance. Of course, selecting the right kind of door can greatly lower the amount of maintenance needed throughout the years, whilst sustaining performance levels and having an extended service life.

So the factors to consider are:

Overhang

Will your new front door be protected by an overhang? Or will it be fully exposed to the elements all year round? Having an overhang will help doors to perform at their peak and greatly increase their life. We recommend contacting your door manufacturer for proper guidance regarding overhangs.

Exposure to the elements

Now, your new front door, by definition, is the main entryway to your home. As such, it is a barrier to the outside world and is exposed to the outside elements. Prolonged sun exposure can be harmful for your door. Therefore, doors facing west or south require a decent level of protection and maintenance. If you have a storm door, you’ll need an overhang.

Choice of colour

We could technically tie this with exposure to the outside world, however, we feel this requires a segment on its own. So the colour choice is also important, as light colours always reflect heat and dark colours tend to absorb light. If your doorway sees a lot of sunlight at the peak hours of the day, lighter colour doors would be the optimal choice.
